Garcinia Cambogia is a yellowish pumpkin shaped fruit that is native to Indonesia. It has recently become well known due to an extract made from the rind of the fruit, which is said to aid weigh loss; however many studies done so far have shown no evidence that taking this extract has any greater effect than a placebo in blind trials.

The active ingredient in Garcinia Cambogia extract is hydroxycitric acid (HCA) and is alleged to improve fat burning and suppress appetite. Other claims made about this fruit are that it may increase red blood count and improved muscle performance during exercise. It has been thoroughly tested on animals and shows no major adverse effects but anyone considering taking it should speak to their physician as with any supplement. Type 2 diabetics should use caution if taking Garcinia Cambogia as it may reduce blood sugar so can have an adverse effect if taken with diabetes medicine.

Some Minor Side Effects

Some minor side effects may occur when taking Garcinia Cambogia, although they are usually the result of taking too large a dose or not taking at the correct times. Stomach discomfort and some vomiting or laxative effects have been recorded in people that have taken more than is recommended.

The claims made about the benefits of taking Garcinia Cambogia are as follows:

  • It prevents fat cells from forming, meaning that fat passes through your system rather than being stored
  • It specifically targets and reduces belly fat
  • It works as an appetite suppressant and helps to control cravings
  • It increases serotonin levels which helps to balance out mood swings and limit emotional eating at times of stress or sadness

And the conclusion...

These claims are not backed up by any scientific evidence in most cases, and so anyone wishing to take this supplement should not expect miracles and should speak to their doctor in advance.

The claims of Garcinia Cambogia supporters are very impressive, and there are studies that allege that it does have a positive effect on weight loss; however as it is recommended in conjunction with an exercise and healthy eating regime it is not clear what is causing the weight loss; it could be an increased effort at a healthier lifestyle rather than the supplement itself. However, as the side effects are mild there is no reason not to try Garcinia Cambogia in order to help you lose weight; even if it just a placebo effect or you exercise more if the end result is what you want then it doesn’t matter how you get there.
